The department of Social Work, Pooja Bhagavat Memorial Mahajana Education Centre in collaboration with ASG eye hospitals, Mysuru celebrated national Eye donation fortnight followed by a free eye screening programme for the employees of the PG centre on 30.08.2023 at the PG centre premises. The programme was graced by Dr. Pavan V Joshi, Senior ophthalmologist, ASG hospitals, Mysuru and Dr. C.K Renukarya, Director, PBMMEC, Mysuru.

Eye donation fortnight, also known as the Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight, is a period dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye donation and encouraging people to pledge their eyes for donation after their death. This event typically spans from August 25th to September 8th in India. The department of Social Work offers initiatives in conducting such programmes with social concerns. The programme began with an official inauguration by the dignitaries and students.

Dr. Pavan addressed the gathering and enlightened about the procedure and importance of eye donation. ‘Eye donation is a noble and life-changing act that involves donating one’s eyes after death to provide the gift of sight to those who are visually impaired or blind due to corneal disorders or injuries. The importance of eye donation cannot be overstated’ said Dr. Pavan. He also explained the procedure of extraction and placement of cornea to the needy.

Director Dr. CK Renukarya highlighted the programmes held in our campus and urged students to participate in all activities. He also spoke about the importance of eye donation fortnight and concluded by thanking the guests.

Guest Profile:

Dr. Pavan is a consultant ophthalmologist, a 4th generation doctor in his family.Completing his school education at Ideal Jawa Rotary School Mysore, and Marimallappas High School and PU college Mysore, He completed his MBBS from JSS Medical College, Mysuru, and MS in Ophthalmology from the prestigious Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. After post graduation, he worked in National Society for Prevention of Blindness (NSPB) for a short period of one year and then joined Annapoorna Eye Hospital, Mysore, as Medical Director and Chief Eye Surgeon from 2017 to 2022 March, thereafter joining ASG Eye Hospital Mysore in April 2022.

He has completed more than 30,000 successful eye surgeries till date.
