The Alumnus was Mr. Vinay Kumar K C of 2022 passed-out batch who is presently working as HR Associate at Mylein Foundry, Bengaluru. The talk began with welcoming the gathering by Ms. Bojamma M N, Assistant Professor, Department of Studies in Commerce,SBRR Mahajana First Grade College (Autonomous) PG Wing, Metagalli, Mysuru.
Dr. N. Roopesh Kumar, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department, Department of Studies in Commerce, introduced the alumnus to the gathering. He narrated how Vinay Kumar K C was during his college days at the M.Com Department. He was a shy and conservative and only minding his business. Now, he has transformed in to a person with teamwork skills and leadership skills which is the order of the day in the corporate sector.
Mr. Vinay Kumar K C in his address shared his experience as a student at the M.Com Department, having the mind-set of just mind your business, was very shy to involve in any activities. He explained how such alumni talks have changed his attitude towards the corporate employment and requirements for various skill-sets.
He explained the students to learn as much technical skill and soft-skill courses as possible during their studies itself rather than joining the courses after their degree where they might have lost both the job opportunities and time. He urged the students to prepare corporate resume about one page with latest photographs and one or two references of some known individuals. He also told the students to update their CVs in the LinkedIn, Naukri.com and other portals so that somewhere the resume will be shortlisted.
The students can also apply directly to the company where there are career opportunities posted in their websites. But, before applying anywhere, one should thoroughly glance through the website of the companies and gain the knowledge about the operations of the company where they are willing to apply.
He also gave tips of completing online certifications through Udemy and other certification websites who charge lesser fees and provide the basic training and certifications in Payroll, Tally ERP, Advanced Excel, XBRL, and so on. The same can be highlighted in the resume.
He also shared his experience of when he attended the interview for the job of HR at Mylein Foundry, Bengaluru the interviewer asked about his salary expectations, and Mr. Vinay Kumar said, he would join the company if the salary is fixed at ₹35,000/-. However, after 3 months of joining when his services were made permanent, he got the access to the details of interview that he faced 3 months ago and found out that the company was ready to negotiate the pay up to ₹45,000/- even for a fresher and for the same position. So, he felt very sad that he could have asked for more salary. So, he gave a tip that before attending an interview the candidates must go through websites such as glassdoor.com, where salary packages, experiences of the previous employees are recorded, shall support the candidate to demand their salary at the time of appointment negotiations.
He also urged the students to take-up internships for one month to three months, if possible, so that their resume will have more weightage rather than showing the experience column as ‘fresher’. He told the students how he regretted for not listening to the teachers when they were telling the students to take-up internships, technical skills and soft-skills certification courses and urged the students to listen to the teachers who urge you to take up internships, technical skills and soft-skills certification courses during their final year of study. He cleared the doubts relating to corporate employments raised by the students during interaction. The Alumni talk ended with Ms. Bojamma, Assistant Professor, Department of Studies in Commerce, rendering the vote of thanks.
