DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK IN COLLABORATION WITH DISTRICT HOSPITAL, Mysuru

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING

The department of Social Work, Mahajana PG Centre in collaboration with the District mental health programme and District hospital Mysuru had organized International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on 26.06.2023 in Mahajana PG centre campus.

International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking or World drug day is observed worldwide to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving the goal of a sustainable world free of substance abuse. Dr. Bhavana, asst professor and head of Social Work Department, Introduced the guests and threw insight on how entire world is facing the menace of drug addiction which has a devastating impact on the addict, individual, family and a large section of society. She also spoke about this year’s theme “People first: Stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention”. The theme highlights the importance of treating people who use drugs with dignity and respect, and of breaking down the stigma and discrimination that often surrounds drug use.

Chief guest Dr. Manju Prasad M.S, District Mental Health programme co-ordinator, Mysuru dist, Dr. Manju Prasad threw insight on the different types of drugs and the consequences of drug abuse on youth.

Dr. Sudharani Nayak, Psychiatrist, District Mental Health programme Mysuru conducted an elaborate session on drug abuse and highlighted the impact of drugs on the lives of people and problems of rehabilitation. She highlighted how serious problem that affects people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It can have a devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities. She stressed that no matter why someone starts using drugs, drug abuse can quickly become a serious problem. Drugs can change the way the brain works, making it difficult for people to stop using them. Drug abuse can also lead to addiction, which is a chronic brain disease that can be very difficult to treat.

Prof Harish Machia, Professor and head of the department of business administration, Mahajana PG centre address the gathering and spoke about How important it is to create awareness on drug abuse and how drug abuse can have serious consequences for the health, relationships, and future of students. Smt. Latha A.C, Inspector of excise Mysuru and her team, faculty and students of different PG departments of Mahajana PG centre were present.
