One day Hands on Workshop on High Performance Liquid Chromatography

in collaboration with Dept. of Biochemistry, MMK SDM College Mysore.

The Workshop was organized with an objective to acquaint the students with knowledge of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography and its working principle, the program comprised of two sessions theory session in the Life Sciences auditorium and the practical session in R&D Centre.

The workshop coordinator was Dr. Girish Chandran, Assistant Professor, Coordinator DoS in Biochemistry. Pooja Bhagavat Memorial Mahajana Post Graduate Centre, PG Wing of SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Mysore. In the first session Dr. Girish Chandran explained the basic principles of chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography detectors with their applications, columns, binary and isocratic gradients, mobile phases, polarity and retention time. Function of UV-Visible detectors and Fluorescence detectors, their working, calibration and applications. Preparing test solutions, Mobile Phase, Setup method for High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Data acquisition software. Software Quantization, Integration and Report Generation. Method development, optimization of various chromatographic parameters and detailed the importance of specific applications, prevention, care, maintenance and trouble shooting. The resource persons for the practical session were Ms. Rayana Lavitha D Silva, Dr. Wethroe Kapfo and Dr. Chaithanya Pandit. In the second session the students were taught to prepare the solutions and were allowed to work with HPLC. Initially the resource persons demonstrated how to handle and use the instrument step by step and helped the students to work with the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography system conveniently.

The event was a successful with 33 participants. The workshop was relevant to their course and was well-appreciated by the students. After completion of this workshop students have felt encouraged to explore further in analytical sciences.
