ELISA and PCR give complementary information about an infection. The value of a combination of both ELISA and PCR, when used at the right time in the disease life cycle, is that we get a more complete picture of the infection. This can help detect disease earlier and make management decisions much faster and stop the spread of disease ultimately will save the life.

PCR and ELISA are the most widely used molecular biology techniques for the diagnosis of diseases at molecular levels. The purpose of the workshop was to make the students understand the procedure and conduct experiments individually, the workshop was designed for two days. The first day started with the theory session followed by the preparation of the reaction mixture for PCR. handling thermocycler and amplifying the sample. Post-noon session the gel electrophoresis was conducted with the initiation of the first-day experiment of Sandwich ELISA and the second day started with understanding the principle and procedure of ELISA and its types in the theory session immediately followed by practical sessions for the whole day. The event was successful with 32 participants. The workshop also had activities such as puzzles and quizzes. The HoD of Biotechnology Dr. Shwetha and Ms. Durgashree accompanied the students. The workshop was relevant to their course and was well-appreciated by the students.

The workshop coordinator Ms. Smitha Grace S.R, Assistant Professor, DoS in Biotechnology has 17 years of teaching and research experience. She has vast hands-on experience in handling and troubleshooting the techniques used in the field of Life Sciences viz bioanalytical, molecular biology, immunological, In vivo &In vitro animalcell culture techniques. Her specialization is phytochemistry, enzyme kinetics and nutrigenomics with 12 publications in peer-reviewed national, international journals and presented many papers in symposium and conferences and bagged prizes. She was accompanied by Dr.Kirti Rani Saad during the practical sessions.
