The workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights,” conducted on October 25, 2024, aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of innovation as a driver of business success and the value of intellectual property rights (IPR) in protecting and leveraging creative assets. Hosted for MBA students and early-career professionals, the session focused on cultivating an innovative mindset and emphasizing IPR as a strategic asset that adds value to organizations. With a practical and interactive approach, the workshop aligned with the modern demands of the business environment, particularly in navigating competitive landscapes through creative solutions and intellectual property awareness.

The Brief of the Event

The workshop commenced with Mr. Rakesh Babuintroduced innovation as the foundation of organizational progress and sustainability in the 21st-century economy and led the session towards the central topic of IPR. He outlined the modern-day relevance of innovation in creating competitive differentiation, with examples of how companies leverage both small-scale improvements and ground-breaking advancements to stay ahead. The session delved into the types of innovation, namely incremental innovation and disruptive innovation. Mr. Babu illustrated that incremental innovation involves making continuous improvements to existing products or processes, leading to steady growth, while disruptive innovation introduces new solutions that significantly alter or create new markets, often challenging or replacing established competitors. By exploring both approaches, participants gained a balanced view of how innovation strategies are applied in various industry contexts.

The discussion then progressed to emphasize why innovation is essential in a rapidly changing global market. Mr. Babu pointed out that in the 21st-century business landscape, innovation is not a choice but a necessity for companies to survive, adapt, and thrive amid technological advancements and shifting consumer demands.

In the second half of the session, the focus shifted to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), where Mr. Babu explained the strategic importance of IPR as both a protective measure and a business asset. He outlined the main types of IPR, including patents, which protect inventions and technological solutions; copyrights, safeguarding creative expressions such as literary and artistic works; trademarks, which protect brand identity through logos, symbols, and names; and trade secrets, Industrial design and Geographical indications which safeguard confidential business information that provides a competitive edge.

To deepen the understanding of innovation and IPR, Mr. Babu conducted several interactive activities aimed at testing participants’ creativity and innovation quotient. These exercises challenged attendees to approach problems with creative solutions and to think critically about how innovation can be applied in real-world scenarios. In these activities, participants were encouraged to collaborate, share ideas, and apply the concepts discussed in the workshop to develop innovative solutions, fostering a dynamic and interactive learning environment.
In the post-lunch session, the workshop concluded with an online quiz focused on IPR. This quiz provided participants with a structured review of the various IPR categories, the nuances of their application, and their strategic significance in today’s business landscape. The quiz also encouraged healthy competition among participants, further reinforcing their learning and understanding of how intellectual property contributes to business success.
