Life Sciences Lecture Series-2023

Life Sciences Lecture series 2023 was initiated by Dr. Cletus J. M. D’Souza with his lecture on enzymology -Reversible inhibition and Cooperativity. The lecture series is organized to utilize the expert experience and the interaction by the students would benefit them in their better understanding of the subject.

The lecture was organized with an objective to provide deep insight on enzymology, understand the role of kinetics in enzymatic reactions, solve kinetic related exercises and estimate important parameter (Km. Vmax, Kcat etc.) understand the kinetics of enzyme inhibition and regulation, comprehend the role of kinetics in understanding reaction mechanisms, have the essential knowledge about enzymes which prepares students for more detailed courses if they are acquiring a higher degree. The program was well received by students of Life Sciences (Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry). The faculty of Life Sciences attended and also participated in the discussion. The talk was relevant to their course and was well-appreciated by the students and faculty. After completion of this program students have felt encouraged to explore further in enzymology.

A brief profile of the resource person

Dr. Cletus D’Souza obtained his M.Sc. and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Mysore. After his PhD he did his Post-doctoral research at Dalhousie University Canada for two years. He then joined the department of Biochemistry, University of Mysore as a lecturer. Later served as Reader and Professor. He was superannuated in the year 2013. He then obtained the Emeritus Professor position from the UGC for two years which he completed in February 2017. Subsequently, Mangalore University and Adi Chunchanagiri Deemed to be University has appointed him as an Adjunct Professor at the Departments of Biochemistry. Dr. Cletus Dsouza has served the University of Mysore as Chairman of the Biochemistry department three times. He was also the coordinator and instrumental behind the existence of the PG center at Hassan and was the head of the department of Bioscience for 9 years. He was the president of the Mysore branch of the Society of Biological Chemists, India. He has also served as an Academic Council member, member of the Research Advisory council of CSIR, Govt of India and as a member of Boards of selection of universities in Karnataka. He was the chairman for the Committee for Development of science in schools, of the University of Mysore (2016-2019). He had Research grants from DST, DBT, UGC, ICMR and CSIR, and also from Erwin Braun Foundation from Switzerland. He has published 70 papers, three book chapters and has made over 130 presentations at National and International conferences. He has two patents to his credit. Dr. Cletus D’Souza has guided 25 students for PhD. His research interests include Membranes, Lipids and Lipoproteins. He is currently engaged in Product development and technology transfer of two technologies in the US.
