Workshop & Hands on Training, One-day “SERB Sponsored Research Facility Training Program”, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, (Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India).

Department of Studies in Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Pooja Bhagavat Memorial Mahajana Education Centre, Post Graduate Wing of SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, in association with Dr. Sreedhar RV, Principal Scientist – Plant Cell Biotechnology Department Associate Professor – Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India)
Mysuru.

Training in research skills is a key element in the development of all postgraduate research students. The key objective of this program is to discuss some critical concepts and fundamental understanding of the state-of the-art research work.

Over the past 15 years, Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has emerged as an indispensable tool to perform routine bioanalysis in various laboratories. Given various configurations, LC Mass Spectrometry has proven to be a powerful qualitative and quantitative analytical technique that is widely used and offers outstanding sensitivity. It has been persistently used in drug development at many different stages including Metabolic Stability Screening, Metabolite Identification as well as In Vivo Drug Screening, Impurity Identification, Peptide Mapping, Glycoprotein Mapping, Natural Products Dereplication, Bio-affinity Screening. LC-MS is now successfully applied to routine analysis in many areas, including therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), clinical and forensic toxicology as well as doping control. This advancement in LCMS was originally and is still fueled by the need for more powerful analytical and bio-analytical techniques that can accurately and precisely discriminate target analytes from high complexity mixtures in a sensitive and selective way. With recent advancement in instrumentation, the use of liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS) has become a powerful two-dimensional (2D) hyphenated technology.

Cell culture is one among the major tools employed in Cellular and Molecular Biology for evaluating the effects of drugs and test compounds on the desired and test compounds on the desired cells and also for assessing the physiological and metabolic changes in cells isolated from various sources. The key advantage of cell culture in these applications is the consistency and reproducibility of the results as the experiments are carried out in a controlled atmosphere. The students understood the complete instrumentation of LCMS and its working principle, procedure and troubleshooting of the instrument, the students were impressed by the explanation given by the resource person and insisted more workshops on the research facilities be made available in the institute.

A Brief Profile of the Resource Persons:

Dr. Sreedhar RV, Principal Scientist – Plant Cell Biotechnology Department, Associate Professor – Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research. CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India), Mysuru has research interest in exploring novel sources of nutraceutically important Omega-3 fatty acids and utilization in development of food supplements, unraveling lipid biosynthetic pathways in newer sources of Omega-3 fatty acids through transcriptomic and lipidomic approaches and characterization of genes involved. Biotechnological production of specialty compounds through plant tissue culture. He also conducts extension activities for dissemination of technologies developed by CSIR-CFTRI among farmers and entrepreneurs.
