The School of Life Sciences organized Two-day Symposium on “Translational Research on Cancer: Bench to Bed Side” with Inter-collegiate Oral and Poster presentation Competition The symposium was conceptualized to bridge the gap between basic and translational research and medical practice.

Translational research moves knowledge about cancer in either direction, between findings at the laboratory bench and clinical observations at the bedside. Both preclinical and clinical research are translational if the specific goal is to move the fruits of basic knowledge closer to clinical application Cancer is responsible for one in eight deaths worldwide, with more than twelve million new cases diagnosed yearly. A large percentage of patients die after developing cancer despite aggressive treatment, indicating a need for new approaches to cancer therapy. The push for development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic agents has allowed translational cancer research to flourish. Genomic and proteomic technologies have generated an enormous amount of information critical to expanding our understanding of cancer biology. New research on the differences between normal and malignant cell biology has paved the way for the development of drugs targeted to specific biological molecules, potentially increasing antitumor efficacy while minimizing the toxicity to the patient that is seen with conventional therapeutics. Current targets in include regulators of cell cycle, angiogenesis, apoptosis, DNA repair, and growth factors and their receptors. Collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and pharmaceutical companies is vital to conducting clinical trials to translate laboratory findings into clinically applicable therapeutics. The students were impressed and insisted many more symposium of this kind.

A Brief Profile of the Resource Persons:

The symposium had five plenary sessions, the first plenary session on 21st Dec 2022 was delivered by Dr B.S Sathish Rao, Director ,Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal on the topic titled “Bench to Bed Side – Pre-clinical Investigation and Translational Impact”. The 2nd plenary session by Dr. Asna Urooj, Professor and Chairman DoS in Food Science and Nutrition, Manasagangotri, UoM, Mysuru on “Nutrition and Cancer –Bench to Bed side”. The 3 rd post noon plenary session was by Dr K.P Guruprasad Associate Director – Research and Head of the Department of Ageing Research, Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal on the topic titled “Flow Cytometry – A Tool of Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy”.

The second day of the symposium on 22nd Dec 2022 was initiated online. The fourth plenary session by Dr. Vasudeva Bhat, Postdoctoral Associate University of Western Ontario, Ontario on the topic e titled A Road Map to Precision Medicine for Breast Cancer Treatment. The fifth and the plenary session was delivered by Dr. Mahadesh Prasad A J. Professor, DoS in Biochemistry, School of Life Sciences, PBMM Post Graduate wing, Mysuru on the topic titled “Role of Transcription Factors in Hematopoietic Malignancy (B-Cell)”.

Post noon sessions on 21st and 22nd Dec 2022, intercollegiate Poster & Oral Presentation Competition for UG and PG students was organised on the themes: Non Coding RNA and Cancer, Cancer and Immune Response, Cancer Immunotherapy, Dietary Pattern in Breast Cancer, Fatty acids and Cancer was organized. 16 teams competed for Poster Presentation event and 8 students competed for Oral Presentation. The winners of the competition were given cash prizes. The judges of the competition were Dr. S.R. Ramesh, Dr. Shivanandappa, Dr. Syeda Kosur Fathima, and Dr.H.N Krishna Kumar. The symposium achieved a very good response, with 250 students from UG and PG in and outside Karnataka were part of the programme. The plenary session by the eminent speakers enthused the budding scientists to newer ideas and motivated them for cancer research.
