Social Work Camp Report
Date: 26.9.24 to 2.10.2024
Venue: Sarkari valmiki ashrama shale Nittur, (Karmadu) Ponamete Taluk, Kodagu Jille.
The Camp Coordinators: Dr. Indushekara G V and Dr. BhavanaV
Planning and Organising: The staff and students had done one visits to the valmiki ashrama shale to ask permission for a students of mahajana college pg , Mysuru for 1week days education camp and communicated and built rapport with ‘ Mr. naveen Kumar.A.M’,Tribal welfare officer who gave permission to stay in school for both boys and girls for 1week. School headmaster Mr. Basvaraju, followed by Mr. Niranjanand sharin Muthappa gram panchayath member helped everyone with accommodation. .Students were divided into sub groups and each group was assigned specific tasks ,various committee was arranged respectively and camp schedule was prepared well in advance.
Objectives:
- Conduct base line survey of the village households to gather data on socio economic condition, awareness among villagers about government programmes available to them
- Identify various formal and informal groups, power structure, caste composition and vulnerable groups in the village
- Identify the felt need, identified needs in the village
- Link the various resources available to the community through governmental sources to the stakeholders
- Offer follow up services for the identified beneficiaries
Introduction: The First year MSW Students accompanied by the staff reached nittur,(karmadu), stayed in the sarkari valmiki ashrama shale .After the proceedings were over, our faculty request the school teachers and Tribal welfare officer,’Mr.Naveen Kumar to extend cooperation to students for the camp and invited everyone to join the inauguration of the camp scheduled from 26.9.24 to 2.10.24 at 3:00 pm. After the innaguration students went to the village to contact villagers in the surrounding to know the roads to survey the hadi for the next few days.
Contact was established with members of grampanchayth of the village and to know about the place and very well communication and rapport was built with school teachers along with children who were very friendly and made everyone comfortable…
Inauguration: Camp was inaugurated by the sarkarivalmiki shale Head Master Mr. Basvaraj, Mr. Niranjan ,the staff members followed by Dr. Indhushekar prof in social work PBMM PG centre ,Mysore.The teaching staff members were given a briefing on the programmes to be held as part of the camp and they assured of their cooperation to the various activities.
Village Survey: Students were given the instructions and set of questions to be asked to localities on the first day of the survey and for next 3days survey was conducted. The students left for the survey. Majority of the members in the locality responded in the first day’s survey. The village survey with localities was completed on 27.9.2024. 110 hadis were covered by 26 students in 4days where few were not avaliable during time of survey and some hadis didn’t respond properly
Village History and Dynamics:
History: Karmuda village, like many villages in India, likely has a deep history influenced by regional traditions, local governance, and changing social structures over centuries.Sometimes, local temples, mosques, or community centers maintain records about the village, especially if it has religious significance. These could include grants, land records, or mentions in religious texts. However, specific information about the history of Karmuda village may not be widely documented in mainstream historical texts, making it necessary to rely on local oral histories, regional historical records, or specialized studies.
Economic Activities: The Tribals grow coffee,orange,arcanut, and peper are majorly grown in karmuda. The tribes will be given 400 rs on daily basis for their work ..
Caste dynamics: Majority caste is scedule tribes.,in tribes. Jainkuruba,yarava and soliga are subcaste under schedule tribes .majority is jain kuruba in this village
Settlement of disputes: Each hadis were having a main leader to. Settle all disputes in the village. The disputes like: family, medical and health facilities,child marriage, alcohol addicts where children below age also have the habit of consuming alcohol counseling will be given by the head of the hadis and they will manage to solve the disputes.
Festivals of tribes: Kunde Habba is a traditional festival celebrated by the Kuruba tribes in the Karnataka region, particularly in the Malnad and Western Ghats areas. This harvest festival is dedicated to the worship of crops, nature, and ancestral spirits. “Kunde” refers to “stomach,” symbolizing nourishment, and “Habba” means “festival.” The celebration is deeply rooted in the agricultural cycle and marks gratitude towards nature for providing food and sustenance.:Kunde Habba is observed during the monsoon season, usually in the month of August or September, which coincides with the growth of crops. The festival is a way to thank the local deities and nature for a good harvest and seek blessings for future prosperity. It also serves as a time for communal gathering and rejuvenation after the hard work of the sowing season.
Festivals of kodagu people: there are 3 festivals celebrated by kodagu people they are:
a.Kailpodh: kalipodh marks the end of the monsoon and the start of the agricultural season. After the heavy rains, Kodava men traditionally prepare for the agricultural season and also clean and worship their weapons (like guns and swords), which are an important part of their warrior culture.
b.kaveri sankramana: This festival celebrates the river Cauvery, which is revered as the holy river goddess by the Kodava people. According to legend, the river’s sacred source is at Talacauvery in Coorg. The festival is marked by the rising of the sacred spring at Talacauvery.
c.Puthari: Puthari, meaning “new rice,” is the traditional harvest festival of Coorg and marks the beginning of the rice harvesting season. It is one of the most important festivals for the Kodava community, symbolizing prosperity and abundance.
Cultural Programmes: from 27.9.24 to 1.10.24 cultural programme was conducted by students every evening from6:30 to 8:00 Dance , songs from social work trainee’s and from school children were performed .Skit was also been played on consequences on child marriage,banned female foeticide and one mime based on ‘unity in diversity’ where all the children enjoyed and learned the social problem which occur in society through skits
Sports: On Sunday 29.9.2024 the students had kept sports for all the children from 1st to 8th std where all children paritcipated actively with full of enthusiasm. Games like:frog race, placing glass,coco,football,cricket, blind fold were conducted and winners were announced .teachers were also partipated and enjoyed with students.
Swatch bharat abiyan: On 30.10.24 Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign (Clean India Mission) was held to Promote better solid waste management, including collection, segregation, and disposal of waste, particularly in urban areas,Creating awareness about cleanliness and hygiene, and changing people’s behavior towards maintaining a clean environment through education and community participation,The campaign aims to end manual scavenging, an inhumane practice, by providing safer and mechanized systems for sanitatio,Promote the cleaning of streets, roads, and public spaces such as schools, offices, markets, and tourist places and
Encourage recycling and the reduction of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste in order to promote sustainable environmental practices.students cleaned up or 5to 6km
Camp Fire: On 30.9.2024 was the last night of the camp where the school teachers planed of firecam and stayed with us that night .Campfires evoke a sense of community, warmth, and adventure. They’re a timeless tradition that brings people together, fostering connection .where all of us shared our experience individually including all the faculty members.Watching flames dancing infront of the camp fire is therapeutic and calming.Campfires provide a unique culinary experience.
Valedictory: On 1.10.2024 Valedictory of the camp was held at 11am. Dr. Indhushekar gave brief report on the work done during the past one week, swatch bhart abhiyan camp was conducted to clean the surrounding. The tribal welfare officer Mr.Naveen Kumar,gram pachyath members followed school headmaster and all the teaching staff appreciated the conduct of the camp and assured of future support for the developmental activities to be undertaken in future.
Conclusion: The camp successfully met its objectives by providing participants with valuable experiences, skill-building opportunities, and fostering teamwork. Despite a few logistical challenges, the activities were well-received, and the overall atmosphere was positive and engaging. The lessons learned from this camp will guide future improvements, ensuring an even more enriching experience next time.
