On June 20th and 27th, 2024, a powerful street play was organized to raise awareness about child rights and the pressing issue of child labor. This event, held at the North gate Mysure palace and bustling NR Mohalla, Mysuru, aimed to educate the public, particularly the youth, about the importance of protecting children’s rights and the detrimental effects of child labor. The street play was a collaborative effort with Don Bosco Makkalalaya involving social work students.

The Inspector of women’s police station Inspector Ganesh, Member of CWC Dhanajaya, SJPU Prasanna Kumar, DCPU, Child helpline-1098 and around 200 Social Work students along with the faculty.

Preparation and Rehearsals

In the weeks leading up to the event, students underwent rigorous rehearsals. Under the guidance of experienced drama instructors and social workers, they prepared a series of short plays depicting different aspects of child rights and the harsh realities of child labor.

The Street Play

The street play consisted of a skits focusing on a different themes related to child rights and child labor: The play highlighted the importance of education for all children and the impact of depriving them of this fundamental right. It emphasized the need for laws to protect children from exploitation and ensure their right to a safe and nurturing environment. The play depicted stark contrast between children who are free to play and those who must work long hours. It underscored the significance of play and leisure in a child’s development. a child laborer who falls ill and cannot access medical care. This performance highlighted the necessity of healthcare as a basic right and the challenges faced by child laborers in receiving adequate medical attention. A scene on girl child abuse was also portrayed.

On 20th, Jatha was conducted from Palace to Doda gadiyara carrying placards and creating awareness to the public. The programme concluded with great success by educating the public with the child helpline number -1098.

On 27th June, the same programme was organized at the hustling roads of NR Mohalla near Mission hospital which was also a resounding success.

The street play on child rights and child labor was a significant step towards raising awareness and promoting advocacy in the community. The collaborative effort of students, educators, NGOs, and local authorities created a powerful platform for education and dialogue. The event highlighted the importance of protecting children’s rights and provided a compelling call to action for the community to work together in eradicating child labor. Moving forward, continued efforts and similar initiatives are essential to create lasting change and ensure a brighter future for all children.
