The mind is considered “as an emergent property of the brain”, Neuropsychiatry is focused on mental disorders in patients with damage to the nervous system. This includes neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cerebral palsy. It also includes mental disorders that develop following brain injuries to understand the details of the disorders the webinar was organized.
Neuropsychiatry is the branch of medicine that treats mental disorders attributable to diseases of the nervous system. In a broader sense, it can be defined as the science that studies and treats disorders of the brain including attentional, motivational, cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and social dysfunctions.
Cell-to-cell adhesion is important for the maintenance of brain structure and function. Abnormal neuronal cell adhesion and loss of its connectivity are considered the main cause of psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD). Various cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are involved in neuronal cell adhesions and thereby affect brain functions such as learning and memory, cognitive functions, and psychiatric functions. Compared with other CAMs, neuronal growth regulator 1 (Negr1) has a distinct functioning mechanism in terms of its cross-talk with cytokine receptor signalling. Negr1 is a member of the immunoglobulin LON (IgLON) family of proteins and is involved in neuronal outgrowth, dendritic arborization, and synapse formation. More recently, accumulating evidence supports that it also plays a critical role in psychiatric disorders. The students were impressed and insisted on many more sessions of this kind.
