Current Research Interest: In the present day, Tourism and travel industry is regarded as one of the active international service sector industries which inspire global trade and commerce. The significance of tourism has been well recognized in both developed and developing countries. In recent times, it has been entered into a new area of development. The tourism industry has emerged as an economic activity of immense global importance. “Tourism and travel has been an effective instrument for generating employment, earning revenue and foreign exchange, enhancing environmental preservation, rejuvenation of the culture and tradition, and thereby facilitating overall development. The relevance of tourism has reached new heights and has a steadfast place all around the globe. It has acquired immense social, cultural and economic significance in modern society”. Therefore, I am very much interested publish and conduct research on Role of Government in Tourism Promotion and Development, Sustainable Tourism Development Goals in India, Rural women empowerment in Tourism domain, Economic, Socio-cultural aspects in Tourism, Destination branding and Image building, Etc.,
Doctoral Research: The doctoral research was undertaken on “Socio-Cultural and Economic Impacts of Ecotourism- A Study on Select Ecotourism Destinations of Karnataka”. Hence, the study made an attempt to know at the micro level covering different inter-related aspects of ecotourism development and socio cultural and economical development of the local community. The present study has been undertaken with a great emphasis on the impacts of ecotourism on local community and it has much relevance in the present-day world.
Despite many endeavors of developers of ecotourism heading to sustainable tourism development with a prime intention topreserve the natural and cultural resources of the destination, many negative effects have resulted from mass tourism. Ecotourism has contributed greatly to the socio-cultural and economic fabrics of the local community. Among other aspects, the importance of the destination environment was always emphasized in ecotourism. The most important contribution of ecotourism to the local environment is the protectionand conservation of biodiversity. Wildlife and natural surroundings are the assets of ecotourism, therefore, the eco-tourism development authorities highly focused on conserving and protecting the site. However, the weak eco-tourism planning and operation may lead to inflow of tourists more than the carrying capacity of the destination and also may lead to massive construction of infrastructure in undisturbed natural areas. The various business stakeholders of the tourism and travel sector may take it as an opportunity to engage in business by starting various ventures and start exploiting the natural and cultural resources of the destination. These uncontrolled and less monitored services offered by the business stakeholders leads to deterioration of environmental resources and damage to biodiversity.
Karnataka is a state in India with plenty of natural and cultural resources. The wildlife sanctuaries and national parks of Karnataka is an abode of many unique and endangered species. The biodiversity of Karnataka is very vivid and glorious. The people living around remote and natural areas are rich in culture and traditions. Due to its prosperous natural and cultural wealth, it has been recognized as one of the classic ecotourism hotspots in India. Eco-tourism projects in Karnataka provide income and livelihood options to rural society. “Ecotourism has always advocated the involvement of the local communities in the development initiatives as they are the most affected group during the conservation process. Most of the Ecotourism destinations of Karnataka are inhabited by the weaker sections of the society including tribes who still lag in the path of the development process”.
Ecotourism development requires well-defined planning and developmental procedures. The principles and practices of ecotourism must be strictly followed to ensure the protection and conservation of cultural and natural property while ensuring socio-cultural and economic development to the rural community. The Ecotourism planning and development in natural areas of Karnataka would attract many domestic and foreign tourists and this flow of tourists would help for better livelihood opportunities to the rural communities. Meanwhile, the increased tourist flow causes pressure on the socio-cultural and environmental fabrics of the local community. Eco-tourism plays a pivotal role in the sustainable inclusive growth and development option for poor people. The central point of this scenario is how the community linked tourism activities are significant in overall tourism development of Karnataka, which in turn, helps in inclusive development of the local communities and benefits the other stakeholders.
Ecotourism may be involved in the comprehensive growth and development of the state andnation. Because, most of the ecotourism destinations are placed amidst the excluded communities, be it the tribes or other marginalized sections. Therefore, the participation of the local community in ecotourism can ensure their inclusion in the development process. These situations need a systematic inquiry into the role of participatory ecotourism in bringing about inclusive development and thereby an equitable social order in the state. To address this aspect, various facets of ecotourism have been looked into inter alia in a community model framework linking stakeholders of the sector in their employment and other livelihood criteria and associated plans.
The study highlighted two important aspects of ecotourism development. Firstly, to assess and evaluate the positive socio-cultural and economic impacts of ecotourism development to local community and secondly, the study envisages to estimate the negative socio-cultural and economic impacts of ecotourism development to the local community. The analysis is carried out by evaluating the perceptions and opinion of representatives of eco-tourists who visited various eco-tourism destinations of Karnataka and local community representatives on eco-tourism development and related benefits to the local community.
