ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR & CO-ORDINATOR OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Current Position: Associate Professor & Coordinator
Qualification: M.Sc., Ph.D.
Teaching Experience: 23 years
Courses offered: Biotechnology
Current research interests: Pharmacological activities of phytochemicals and Plant Biotechnology
In India, medicinal plants are widely used by all sections of people either directly as folk remedies or in different indigenous system of medicine or indirectly in the pharmaceutical preparations. Ayurveda and Siddha are the two Indian traditional systems of medicine practiced in India wherein many herbs are using as therapeutics. Plant phenolics are commonly found in both edible and non-edible plants and have been reported to have
multiple biological effects viz., anti cancer, anti microbial, antidiabitic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activities etc. Among various diseases attributed to mortality in humans all over the world, cancer is a leading cause. Plants are prime source of highly effective conventional drugs for the treatment of many forms of cancer. It is significant to note that, over 60% of currently used anti-cancer agents are derived in one way or other way from natural sources, including plants, marine organisms and micro-organisms. Plant-derived compounds have played an important role in the development of several clinically useful anti-cancer agents. Current research mainly focuses on development of anticancer components from medicinally important plants.
Doctoral Research: In doctoral research, distributional and phenological aspects of rattans in the Western Ghats of Karnataka have been studied. Microsporogenesis and the development of male gametophyte have been studied in 16 species of palms namely to know the development pattern of anther and pollen grains. Scanning Electron Microscopic studies on pollen surface have been conducted in 16 species of palms to know the exine ornamentation and its significance in taxanomy. Pollen germination experiments have been conducted in 10 species of palms to know the viability of pollen grains. Megasporogenesis and the development of female gametophyte have been studied in six species of palms to know the mode of development of female gametophyte. The study of the development of the endosperm and embryo has been carried out in four species of Calamus. The endosperm development is of the Ab initio nuclear type. The seed germination experiments have been conducted in few species of palms to know the post-seminal development of embryo. Systematic position of the family Arecaceae has been discussed based on embryological characters.
