Doctoral Research: The study is about the performance persistence of actively managed mutual funds and index mutual funds. The study was done with the basic objective of measuring the performance among managed funds and index funds, which funds is successful in outperforming the benchmark in the short-run and in the long-run. For the study 7 index funds and 21 actively managed mutual funds were chosen. The performance of the selected funds has been measured using reliable measures. Sharpe’s, Jenson’s, Trenor’s measure, Sortino ratio and Tracking error have been employed to capture the performance. Co-integration study and Robustness test and Data Envelope Analysis have also been used to measure the relative performance of both the categories of funds.Non-parametric measures such as contingency table analysis was undertaken to assess performance persistence among the index and actively managed mutual funds and the observations from the same were further analyzed using Brown and Goetzmann’s Zstatistics and Kahnn and Rudd’s chi-square tests. The outcome of the study revealed that the fund size is large in case of actively managed mutual funds compared to index funds. And the performance of Index mutual funds was not persistent in the short run, whereas actively managed mutual funds partially persistent in the short-run. Whereas the performance of actively managed mutual funds was persistent partially. Actively managed mutual funds failed to outperform the index funds and also index funds proved to be technically efficient.
